Web Site Design - Bells & Whistles

If you have seen an number of web sites on the internet then you must have seen some laden with 'bells and whistles'. What do we mean by 'bells and whistles'? Well, we mean lots of moving graphics, pop-up menus, and sound effects.

It is debatable if using lots of moving graphics and sound effects is wise on commercial web site. However, when used carefully  and in the context of the web site they can be very effective and bring your web site to life or add functionality.

The other aspect of using lots of graphics is that they add to the download time. A balance has to be struck between the size and number of graphics and the page download time.

Moving web graphics fall in two camps, they are either animated Gifs or they use Java Scripts. Each have their own attributes and therefore are more suited to different tasks. We have developed an number of custom scripts for animated Gifs and Java moving images.

Also sounds effects can be added to web sites either as background or 'event' sound effects. You have to be careful when using sound effects that they do not become 'irritating'.

When we are designing a web site and we feel it would benefit from moving graphics or sound effects we will demo the effects to the client for approval. If the client would specifically like some effects we are able to demonstrate a range of examples to choose from, or we can develop custom effects.
